Cernavoda bridge toll to be lifted completely until September, after much dispute

The bridge toll drivers have to pay at the Fetesti-Cernavoda checkpoint on the Sun Highway will be lifted completely until September 1st, and not just on the weekends, according to Alexandru Nastase, head of the Department for Infrastructure Projects.

“We have a lot of traffic during the week, on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Lifting it only during the weekends is not enough”, according to Nastase.

The measure comes after Victor Ponta criticized the Road Authority on Thursday for the fact that it wasn’t able to find a system for the toll to be paid in a timely manner and to avoid queues.

“The Road Authority managed to yet again make a disaster of the Fetesti checkpoint. People are reluctant to go on holiday. (…) We keep people waiting for 13 RON, we humiliate them and the fact that CNADNR is so incompetent that it cannot devise a system for people to move on quickly, to pay, it’s not the citizens’ fault”, Ponta said in a government meeting.

Starting with last year, the Government introduced the measure of removing the bridge toll on weekends in 2012, when drivers that would head for the seaside on Friday and come back on Monday would not have to pay the tax. Last year, weekends were completely clear of the Fetesti toll. This year, the measure was supposed to be applied from July 4 to August 31. On Friday morning, the toll was completely lifted.
