Four people, including a 13-year-old boy, have drowned and two are missing in floods that hit Romania over the weekend, Interior Minister Gabriel Oprea said on Monday, quoted by MEDIAFAX. The most affected areas in the country are in the south of the country, where rivers swelled following heavy rainfall and melting of snow in the mountains.

Authorities added that 250 were evacuated and, in total, 86 villages were affected by the floods. On Monday evening, minister Oprea said that 35 villages are still feeling the effects of the floods.

Previously, interior minister Gabriel Oprea said an 80-year-old man in the southern county of Olt died after a mudslide hit his home and another man in a village near Bucharest also died in the floods. Emergency services spokeswoman Madalina Epure said a 13-year-old boy had been found dead Monday having been swept away by floodwaters. Emergency services carried out some 550 rescue operations.

A red code for flooding will remain active in Romania until Tuesday evening (6 pm) according to the National Institute for Hidrology. The warning is available for the rivers Vedea, Teleorman, Cainelui (Teleorman county). Another yellow code for flooding refers to the rivers Calmatui, Vedea, Teleorman (Teleorman county), Sabar, Ciorogarla (Giurgiu and Ilfov County, Ialomita (Ialomita county), Buzau and SH Banita (Braila county).

Flooding also happened in Romania’s Balkan neighbours Bulgaria and Serbia. In Bulgaria, several municipalities declared a state of emergency as water from the river Lom flooded houses, roads and bridges, the BTA news agency reported on Monday.

Hundreds of people had to be evacuated from their homes and more may yet have to be moved out of the way as waters are expected to continue rising in western, central and eastern Serbia in the coming days.
