Tip taxation has sparked controversy in the Chamber of Deputies on Monday. Liberal MP Andreea Paul has requested the resignation of Finance minister Eugen Teodorovici and full repayment of the sums, according to Mediafax. Also, Teodorovici said that tip taxation was “an experience, not a failure” and that he gave it up.
The discussions in the Chamber of Deputies on tip taxation took place at the request of the popular and democrat group, as part of the “minister’s hour”.
“This idea of tip taxation appeared in 2012, the measure being adopted now in the well-known context of ANAF verifications, more specifically when there were differences of untaxed money. The whole market was unhappy with the closure of companies, therefore we opted for this solution. The important thing is that there was not a measure to increase taxes in the budget, but to solve a punctual problem. The implementation of the measure agreed by the industries’ representatives stirred other complaints and in order to solve them, we organized a new consultation at the end of last week and we tried to find together alternative solutions to the benefit of both parties. The conclusion of the meeting was to renounce to the tip regulated through the Emergency Ordinance 8/2015. There were voices in this meeting who supported the idea of the measure to be maintained as optional but, given that in practice there are situations that cannot be solved, we gave up this measure,” said Teodorovici.
Liberal MP Andreea Paul said minister Teodorovici’s intervention is characterized by “guts and arrogance” and that PNL requests the resignation of the minister and the full reimbursement of amounts from taxed tips.
