Orange, RCS&RDS have highest Internet download speed in Romania

Newsroom 08/07/2015 | 14:42

According to data from the National Authority for Management and Regulation in Communications (ANCOM), Orange offered the best download speed for mobile Internet, while RCS&RDS topped the charts for fixed Internet.

The numbers, based on tests conducted by users and offers entered by operators, cover the first 6 months of 2015 and take into account all 12 million mobile Internet connections and 93 percent of the 4 million fixed Internet connections in Romania

For mobile Internet connections, Orange Romania offered download connections of 34.15 Mb/s indoor and 52.81 Mb/s outdoor while it main competitor, Vodafone Romania had speeds of 16.94 Mb/s indoor and 27.80 Mb/s outdoor.

For fixed Internet connections, RCS&RDS had download speeds of 95.21 Mb/s on cable  and 42.43 Mb/s wireless, as opposed to mobile speeds of 2.71 Mb/s indoor and 2.66 Mb/s outdoor. Nextgen Communications followed closely with 63.83 Mb/s on cable and 34.61 Mb/s wireless, while UPC Romania reached 49.52 Mb/s on wire and  28.62 Mb/s wireless.

Based on user tests (over 110,000 tests were made since the Netograf.ro application launch in October 2014), the Netograf.ro statistics section displays the average values of download and upload speeds, delay and delay variation in packet transfer, loss rate of packet and data, enabling users to compare actual performance of fixed and mobile Internet operators in Romania. However, these statistics have informational value and are not a guarantee that a particular user will experience the same quality of connection as another.

The application tests the connection quality between the end user equipment and a test server located in an Internet interexchange type hub, indicating a parameter value close to the actual experience of the client in using the Internet.

Authorized Internet providers are required to enter their technical data into the application, according to ANCOM decision no. 1201/2011. The provisions of the Decision applies to Internet access services provided through public fixed or mobile electronic communications, regardless of the technology used for Internet access. In addition, according to that decision, providers of Internet access are required to include in their end user contracts the parameters they offer (such as the nominal speeds / maximum download and upload) and to publish on their website a series of other administrative parameters.

Romania ranks 16 globally with 11.3 Mb/s (according to Akamai 2014 rankings).
