Small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) make up 99 percent of the active companies in Romania, while their employees represent 66 percent of the total number of employees- in line with the European average.

However, Romanian SMEs come short when it comes to their ability to bring added value to the economy, according to a survey carried out by Fundatia Post-Privatizare.

The survey called The Current Situation of Small and Medium Sized Enterprises in Romania, 2012 Edition, reveals that most SMEs have activities in the services area- they represent 39.5 percent in the total economic activities, compared to 44.2 percent at the level of the entire Europe.

Startups are on the rise

Registrations of new companies at the National Trade Registry Office (ONRC) have soared by 9 percent on the previous year. Most startups were in trade (28.4 percent), agriculture (15.6 percent) and other services (23.9 percent).

The SME’s contribution to the total turnover of the Romanian industry is 40 percent, being the main suppliers in the food industry, wood processing industry, rubber and plastic products industry, paper and print industry and metallic constructions industry.

SMEs in agriculture are particularly buoyant, seeing their turnovers substantially increase from one year to the next, which represents 72.5 percent of the total turnover in agriculture.

The statistical analysis is based on the situation of SMEs in non-financial sectors such as agriculture, industry, energy, constructions, trade and services.
