Romania’s demographic crisis deepens as birth rate dwindles

Romania’s resident population was less than 20 million in 2013 for the first time after 1989, National Institute of Statistics (INS) President Tudorel Andrei announced on Thursday. Another premiere last year was the number of life-births falling below 180,000, the lowest birth rate since after the Second World War. By comparison, 25 years ago there were 300,000 babies born per year.

Romanians are not only getting married at an older age but most couples limit themselves to having only one child.

INS data shows that in January 2014 there were 1,360 births less than in the previous year. Furthermore, there are 20 births every hour in Romania, which may seem like a lot, but statistics place us at the bottom of the birth-rate global ranking.

It’s not just about finances and emigration, doctors believe that sterility is a real problem for more couples than people imagine. The new Health Law doesn’t cover infertility investigations and the National In Vitro Program run by the Health Ministry was suspended for lack of funds.
