Things to do in Bucharest this weekend

The second week of 2016 is ending with a myriad of things to do in Bucharest this weekend, ranging from concerts to ballet shows on ice that are worth getting out of the house for despite the fact that winter seems to be making a comeback in Bucharest.

The Russian St. Petersburg State Ballet on ice is performing The Nutcracker on Sunday, Jan 17, at Sala Palatului in Bucharest, promising a “magical atmosphere” provided by its world-famous skaters, according to the venue’s website.

Another event taking place in Bucharest this weekend that is not to be missed is the performance of Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata, for the first time at the National Opera Bucharest. It will be played throughout the weekend, including Friday at 19:00, so there’s the option of going to the opera on Saturday and catching the ballet on Sunday.

Also this weekend, the “Zdob si Zdub” band will be performing a celebratory concert with the occasion of their 20-year anniversary at the Arenele Romane in Bucharest. They’ve even prepared for the cold weather with the “tent at the Arene heated non-stop with a special heating system” and even snow removal vehicles, according to their Facebook page.

Among the plays showing in theatres this weekend are Vanilla Skype at the Act Theatre, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Twelfth Night at the Metropolis Theatre on Saturday and Sunday, respectively; A Streetcar Named Desire at the Odeon Theatre and The Bach Files at the Bulandra Theatre on Saturday.
