Romania plays an important role in the process of cutting back on greenhouse gas emissions, especially in southeastern Europe, said, on Thursday, Jian Xie, an expert on environment issues operating out of the World Bank during a press conference.

The World Bank aims to help countries to establish their own policy of countering the effects of greenhouse gas emissions. Although Romania is not a country like China, Germany or France, in regard to its contribution to reducing emissions that contribute to global warming, Romania is important in the area of southeastern Europe, where it has a substantial contribution. Romania itself has problems in terms of greenhouse gas emissions and that’s why there’s room for improvement. We have prepared for Romania a programme aimed at countering climate changes, under which we will provide assistance for a period of two years, while also promoting green economy”, said Jian Xie, quoted by economica.net.

According to data presented by the World Bank expert, the energy sector is responsible for nearly 70 percent of the total of greenhouse gas emissions, the transport sector has 11 percent, agriculture has 15 percent. At the same time, the forestry sector is an important absorber of emissions.

“The urban sector is also important, with all its sub-sectors. In this sector we must develop the efficiency of solid waste management and water supply, as well as the healthcare sector”, says Jian Xie.
