About 30 pct of employers plan to hire this summer

Almost three out of 10 employers estimate they will be hiring between July and September 2016, according to a study by Manpower. These plans are the most optimistic for companies in Romania over the last eight years and the most ambitious across the EMEA area.

Of the 625 employees surveyed, 29 percent indicated an intent to increase its total number of employees over this period, with only 7 percent anticipating reductions and the rest of 64 percent not expecting any changes.

This results in a seasonally adjusted net employment outlook (which is derived by taking out the percentage of employers anticipating an increase in hiring volume and the percentage of employers expecting a decrease in employment at their company in the next quarter) of 16 percent, the strongest in EMEA and among the top five in all 43 countries and territories included in the global study.

Significant changes over the prior quarter and year, by 3 and 8 percentage points, are a positive signal for graduates preparing to enter the job market this summer, but also for the economy as a whole. Signs of renewed appetite for employment can be found both in Manpower’s study and in practice, and we hope that this appetite is accompanied by increased interest and investment in talent development, necessary for this market to remain dynamic,” said the general manager of Manpower Group Romania, Valentin Petrof.

Headcount is expected to increase this summer in eight of the 10 industry sectors in Romania.

The most robust plans are reported by employers in the manufacturing sector, where the net employment outlook of +36 percent reflects solid hiring intentions. The same level was registered in the second quarter of 2008, when the survey was launched in Romania, and remained the most optimistic forecasts made in the sector.

Hiring expectations for the manufacturing sector are improved by 8 percent over the Q2 2016 and by 16 percent over the third quarter of 2015.

The weakest hiring intentions are announced by employers in the electricity, water and gas sector. However, though negative (-2 percent), the forecast in this sector is still 3 percentage points stronger than the one in Q2 2016, and 7 percent higher than Q3 2015.

The North West region of the country indicated the strongest employment outlook (+26 percent) among all eight regions of the country, followed by the Centre (+13 percent) and South (+11 percent). The less optimistic forecasts, illustrated by a net employment outlook of +3 percent, are reported in the North-East.

The size of the company is important in influencing employment prospects, the study shows, with employers in large companies of over 250 employees being the most optimistic with a reported net employment outlook of +25 percent. On the other hand, employers of micro-organizations (with up to 10 employees) were the most cautious, with an outlook of +7 percent.
