Beijing Genomics Institute representatives have visited Cluj-Napoca as part of wider tour in southeastern Europe as the Chinese genomics company plans to open a new research hub in the region.

The delegation of the company was welcomed by the deputy president of the Cluj County Council Vakar Istvan.

“At present Cluj county holds all the assets for such a niche investment, such as the research in bioinformatics,” said Vakar, quoted by actualdecluj.ro.

The Chinese company is looking for a city that hosts a university and has a good medical infrastructure and supportive local authorities.

Beijing Genomics Institute was founded in 1999 as a research institute in the Human Genome Project.

BGI is providing solutions on biological, agricultural and medical research. The group is also involved in a gene bank and one of its subsidiaries acts as a cross-sector educational platform.
