The Bucharest International Film Festival (BIFF) will kickstart on Wednesday five days full of film screenings. The longest standing film festival in the Romanian capital, BIFF will screen on the opening night the Jim Sheridan-directed drama The Secret Scripture, starring Vanessa Redgrave.

The event, which runs until Sunday, aims to be a cultural journey into the characteristics and the identity of different communities, as well as a professional contest of ideas, techniques and, most of all, a unique opportunity to discover experimental and potentially memorable shorts and features.

Irish feature The Secret Scripture stars Oscar-winning A-lister Vanessa Redgrave and Oscar-nominated newcomer Rooney Mara, alongside Theo James, Eric Bana sand Omar Sharif jr.

The festival’s 13th edition will end on July 2nd with a screening of Road to Mandalay, winner of several prizes at the Venice, Toronto and Brussels festivals.

This year, the festival’s jury will gather Chilian actor and Paris theatre director Brontis Jodorowski, Carla Vulpiani, program director of the Milan International Film Festival, director and film critic Laurentiu Damian and more. Italian director Paolo Genovese, who will preside over the jury.

Italian TV personality Gabriella Carlucci will bring to the Romanian market a contest for young filmmakers. Romanian-Italian actress and director Kristina Cepraga will be the festival’s godmother and artistic counsellor, and will host the opening and closing ceremony.

Starting this year, the creative director of the festival is Dan Draghicescu.
