Business owners who did not request a fire safety permit could see them shuttered by the Inspectorate for Emergency Situations. The deadline for submitting the request was 1 October.

Fire regulations were tightened after the fire that occurred in Colectiv night club. In its first meeting in November 2015, the Romanian Government adopted a decision by which businesses can be shut down if they don’t have a fire safety permit. The deadline set for obtaining the permit was 31 December 2015.

Unions said at the time that the Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (ISU) was overloaded with requests as well as complaints submitted by the companies that were not allowed to function. The law was subsequently amended and the deadline was postponed by 31 December 2016. Subsequently, the Government intervened and asked for the deadline to be pushed back to 30 June 2017, and later the Parliament also pouched it back to 30 September.
