Former agriculture minister Dacian Ciolos is the new European Union commissioner on agriculture, after unanimously winning a vote of approval in European Parliament hearings late last week.
The future of the Common Agricultural Policy after 2013 and its budgetary aspects, use of direct payments, volatility of prices in the food markets and ongoing international negotiations were among the topics raised by MEPs during Ciolos’s hearing.
“I’m a reformer”, said Ciolos at his hearing. “The Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) needs to be reformed, and reform does not mean reducing financial support but adapting it to tackle the new challenges.”
