The Environment Ministry will forbid hunting in the Romanian Danube Delta, with the exception of pests that can harm the ecosystem, following an order signed by minister Rovana Plumb which will be published next week in the Official Gazette.
“The Danube and the Delta are much more than geographic spaces or environment preoccupations, they are spaces of tradition, true cultural treasures,” said Plumb.
Species such as the jackal, the wolf or the fox which can multiply uncontrollably and become pests can be hunted, but only in the numbers established by the Ministry of Environment.
Currently, a bill that reintroduces hunting in the Danube Delta reservation, via an amendment initiated by Democrat-Liberal Deputy Vasile Gherasim is in debate at the Chamber of Deputies.
Prime-minister Victor Ponta told the minister of environment that the Government should have a very clear position regarding the bill which makes hunting legal in the Danube Delta, and said he does not agree with such a measure.
Currently, based on Law 136/2011, hunting in this area is forbidden.
