Eurostat: Romania had one of the largest increases in air passenger transport in 2016

Romania was one of the countries with the largest increase in air passenger transport in 2016, coming only second after Bulgaria, according to Eurostat.

The number of passengers that travelled by air in the European Union increased to 5.9 percent last year compared to 2015 and 29.1 percent compared to 2009. The number reached 972.7 million passengers, which is more with precisely 54.4 million passengers than 2015.

Romania’ air passenger transport increased by 20.5 in 2016, with a total of 15.1 million passengers. While only 895,000 of the passenger flew on domestic routes, 12.3 million were intra-EU and 1.9 million were extra-EU.

In terms of total passengers carried, Henri Coanda airport from Bucharest had a total of 11.3 million passengers, out of which 8.4 million passengers flew on intra-EU routes, 1.6 million to extra-EU destinations and 873,000 flew only on the Romanian territory.
