Fuel excises were hiked by RON 0.16/litre for all three categories from this Friday, and from October 1 there will be a second increase.

The minister of Finance, Ionut Misa, announced at the end of August that the fuel excises will increase in two stages, from September 15 and October 1, by RON 0.16/litre. He said that the measure will be taken in stages in order not to produce a shock at the consumer level that can lead to increases of prices.

A day later, the National Union of Road Transporters in Romania (UNTRR) asked the government not to increase the excises in fuels, but to improve the back payment system of VAT for foreigners, so that Romania becomes a fuel supply center from Balkans, such as Luxembourg in Western Europe.

On the other hand, the president of the National Council for SMEs (CNIPMMR), Florin Jianu, warned in a conference from September 5 that the fuel prices already increased, without the introduction of the excise.

In Romania, the annual consumption stands at approximately 7 billion litres of fuels.
