Prime Minister Mihai Tudose has announced that former football player Gica Popescu has been offered a counselor role, and he will work on preparing the matches Romania will host as part of the European Football Tournament in 2020.

Tudose said that he had talked with deputy PM Marcel Ciolacu and decided that they need a specialist to take care of the preparations for this event, and the criteria included being familiar with UEFA.

Tudose stated: “In 2013, Romania pounded its chest saying it would organise a group of the UEFA Euro Tournament. We shook hands with UEFA, we were very proud at that moment. Nothing has been done. We needed four stadiums”.

The Prime Minister then confirmed that Gica Popescu is the person he chose to work on this project, as he is experienced in football and has dealt with UEFA before. He added that he hopes Gica Hagi would join the team as well.

Gica Popescu had a very successful career in the 1990s. He was a key part of the national football team and captain of FC Barcelona.

Romania obtained the right to organize three matches in the group phase of the 2020 tournament, as well as one match in the first knock-out round.
