Iohannis requests government to scrap pardon law amid street protests

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis asked the Government to scrap the proposed pardon law as well as to give up plans to amend the Penal Codes, warning that “people’s voices can no longer be ignored.”

The Government cannot overlook the will of the citizens, which is sovereign. The voice of the people cannot be ignored! A solid democracy is one where the majorities do not abuse their rights just because they hold, temporarily, the power. I ask the Government to drop initiatives on pardon and the amendment of Penal codes,” Iohannis wrote on Facebook.

Iohannis stressed that “Romania has only to lose from prolonging this situation that brought tens of thousand Romanians to the street.”
