Iohannis: Universities should define better mission, socio-economic context they answer to

“There is a need for universities to define their mission better and the socio-economic context they answer to” President Klaus Iohannis said in his speech at the opening of a Romanian Student Organisations’ Forum in the Auditorium of the Lower Danube University of Galati on Tuesday.

The head of state criticized the fact that in certain universities professors read to their students from book chapters. “Unfortunately, there are bachelor and master’s degree programmes where professors still dictate from book chapters, instead of stimulating the creativity of the students and their critical reasoning. We do not only waste potential through school dropout or failure to pass the national evaluation exam or the Baccalaureate, but also through the lack of access to quality higher education programs designed to enable students to generate their own life-long training.”

According to Iohannis, the number of students in Romania continues to drop, for reasons that have to do with the capacity if universities to attract potentially valuable students from difficult socio-economic backgrounds.

The event was attended by over 350 students from 17 university centers nationwide.
