Mayor Gabriela Firea said on Monday she was starting an audit procurement procedure to assess the health of the Bucharest municipality’s finances. According to Firea, key people repeatedly told her the institution could be facing bankruptcy.
“Starting Monday [June 27] I begin a procurement procedure of human resources audit that will start in the next period, also a financial audit, an audit of all commissions and procurements, so that we have a very clear picture”, Firea told broadcaster Romania TV.
According to Bucharest’s general mayor, during City Hall meetings, several directors told her the institution, the largest employer among institutions in the public administration, could be hit by financial trouble. Moreover, Firea added, the Bucharest City Hall is also affected by the public’s general view that public administration employees cannot be genuinely trusted.
“We are bankrupt from two perspectives: a moral bankruptcy, because people don’t really trust people working within the administration, bureaucrats, public servants […] and the financial bankruptcy,” Firea said, adding that “no matter what I ask, they tell me: “Oh, well, there isn’t any money.”
According to Firea, Bucharest City Hall is the largest employer among public administration institutions in the country.
