Bucharest mayor Gabriela Firea said on Monday she plans to halt the flux of old cars that enter Bucharest streets, because they alter not only traffic, but also the air quality, causing sever health issues. Since the beginning 2017, a total of 100,000 second-hand cars were registered in Bucharest.
“We live in a busy city, with a lot of cars. Since the beginning of the year and until now, 100,000 second hand cars were registered in the capital,” Firea said. “Europe’s old cars have made their way to Bucharest. There is an ongoing collaboration and dialogue with the Vice Prime Minister, the Minister of Environment, to identify new solutions, so that we can stop this exodus of old cars in the capital, because they severely damage not only traffic, but also our health, the environment, because they create pollution and I don’t think that something we want,” Firea added.
According to Firea, the municipality’s effort to buy 400 Euro 6 buses, 100 electric buses, 100 trams and 100 trolleybuses is in vain, if very old cars are still used heavily in the capital.
