The Ministry of Finance (MFP) says that Romania has to pass legislation in order to assume its role as a member of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), which is led by China.

The AIIB has added seven new members, including Romania. In total, the bank has 77 members, out of which 23 are members of the European Union.

“By becoming a member of the AIIB, Romania has the opportunity to get financing for infrastructure project and economic development. This comes on the back of efforts of states in Europe and Asia to enhance the bilateral relations on the two continents,” said the MFP in a statement.

The infrastructure bank has its headquarters in Beijing and focuses on the financing of projects in various sectors such as energy, transports, telecom, rural infrastructure, water supply and environment protection.

The bank is set to provide USD 15 billion worth of financing this year, up USD 1.2 billion compared to last year. Until now, the lender has provided financing for 10 investment projects.
