Mitsubishi CEO says no plan for plant in Romania

The CEO of Japanese car maker Mitsubishi, Osamu Masuko, said the company does not explore a potential investment in Romania, rejecting local media reports which stated the firm was looking at the country for a engine factory.

“We don’t have such plans,” said the executive during the Geneva Auto Show 2017, according to HotNews.ro.

Mitsubishi, which is now part of the Renault-Nissan alliance, but the CEO of the group, Carlos Ghosn, claimed that we will not see a “Mitsubishi Logan” or “Mitsubishi Duster”, although some operations could be combined within the alliance. The Logan and Duster are currently manufactured under the Dacia brand.

Representatives of Mitsubishi had met with government officials in Bucharest, and the media reported that the company was looking to invest EUR 200 million in an engine plant in the region.

At present, Romania hosts two manufacturers of vehicles – Dacia, controlled by French Renault, and American Ford. They are joined by a plethora of car parts makers, including Bosch and Dräxlmaier Group.
