Over 51 percent of Romanian women have a positive attitude towards entrepreneurship, says a GfK study, presented by Amway Global Entrepreneurship Report (AGER) 2016.

The study takes into consideration two perspectives: women’s perception and potential for entrepreneurship.

“Unfortunately, the potential of entrepreneurship is in decrease, a third of the women who have a positive attitude towards entrepreneurship are willing to start their own business. We have to take into account some reasons, such as confidence and stability. If we refer to the attitude towards entrepreneurship in Romania compared to EU countries and the countries at global level, 76 percent of global countries have a positive attitude towards it, 72 percent at EU level, while Romania has 51 percent, “ says Carmen Paunescu, professor at UNESCO department from Bucharest University of Economic Studies.

There is a difference between genders also towards entrepreneurship. In 2016 more than half of the men who have a positive attitude towards entrepreneurship are willing to start their own business.

“The lower willingness of starting a business among women can be argued through their fulfillment of personal development and independence at their current jobs, “ adds Paunescu.

The entrepreneurship spirit, measured by Amway through the entrepreneurship spirit index, expressing the willingness for entrepreneurship, confidence and stability, shows values above 50 percent at global level, while at EU level they are lower and even lower in Romania among women, 31 percent.

“These figures reveal to us an entrepreneurship potential that is insufficiently exploited. The lack of confidence in their abilities for setting a start-up can be overcome if we focus on these skills even from early stages, in primary school, ” says Paunescu.

“Our association supports the growth of women in leadership. We launched three years ago a program and there are already 4 editions in our portfolio. We organize seminar that teach them business skills. We also have volunteers that go in high schools and talk to students about entrepreneurship,” adds Madalina Radulescu, vice president of Professional Women’s Network.

GfK conducted the study in 45 countries. Over 1,000 persons were surveyed annually, 51 percent of them being women. They were asked to answer 5 questions.
