PM Sorin Grindeanu stated on Thursday that his objective is to close the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism (CVM) for Romania before Romania takes over the presidency of the EU Council.

My objective and that of the Government I am heading is to close the CVM before Romania takes over presidency of the EU Council. It is a matter of prestige and not only, about which I care very, very much,” PM Grindeanu said at Victoriei Palace, in a joint press conference with First President of the European Commission Frans Timmermans and Justice Minister Tudorel Toader.

The head of government recalled the fact that Romania received four positive CVM reports in a row. “I want to have a final report that is positive, at the end of 2017, which can represent the basis to close this mechanism. (…) I stress the major progress we have achieved up until now in the field of justice and we will not make any step backwards in what it means to guarantee a correct and independent act of justice,” Grindeanu said.

According to the Romanian PM, The priorities are aligning legislation with the decisions of the Constitutional Court of Romania, ensuring it fully abides by the fundamental rights, it guarantees efficiency, predictability and the quality of the act of justice, as well as bringing justice closer to the citizen, Grindeanu said.
