PM Mihai Tudose said that that the public sector jobs will be frozen, meaning that new hirings will be made only in certain conditions.
He said that this move is necessary to count the number of positions available in the public sector. Tudose added that if a minister needs to hire people, it can submit a memorandum to present the reasons why it needs new people.
The PM added that the system suffers from “lack of performance”, but in the same time there are “many available positions”, “hundreds, thousands of free positions”. In the same time, Tudose explained that there are certain structures that have “bloated” personnel schemes.
The head of the government went on to say that authorities need to know how many jobs are unfilled so that the staff structure can answer better to real needs.
Romania recorded around 5.5 million employees at the beginning of this year, out of which around 1.2 million were working for the state.
