President Iohannis: Drafting budget, between adopted measures and 3 pct deficit, no easy feat

According to Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, the government will have difficulties in drafting a budget that balances the impact of the measures it already adopted by it and can also meet the “compulsory” requirement of maintaining a 3 percent deficit.

“It will not be easy at all to create a budget with measures already approved and within the 3% deficit, but it is binding,” said Johannis at the end of talks at Cotroceni Palace with PM Sorin Grindeanu and Minister of Finance Viorel Stefan.

The Romanian President stressed that “it is very important to have a sustainable budget for 2017, solid, which can take into account some very important data,” including a deficit below 3 percent and allocation of 2 percent of it for the defense sector.

We were assured that these things will be achieved,” said Klaus Johannis.

The Romanian president also touched upon a topic that made numerous headlines, that of the allegation made by Liviu Dragnea about the RON 10 billion missing from the budget.

“For reasons I do not know the phrase initially used was ‘hole in the budget,’” but “there can be no such thing,” Iohannis said, saying that “it is an amount that was not collected, for reasons that others will have to explain, those who governed, not me.”

Regarding the idea to constitute a parliamentary commission to investigate this matter, Klaus Johannis was interviewed said “it is better to take it slow with these inquests from Parliament”. Those who have the expertise should make a serious analysis and avoid making the subject into a political disputes.
