The law regarding the promotion of eco-friendly transport, through which at least 30 percent of the public transport vehicles purchased by local authorities will need to be electric, has been signed by President Klaus Iohannis.

The law aims to promote eco-friendly transport by reducing pollution and fuel consumption in urban centres, as well as promoting new technology in the field.

The 30 percent electric figure will be calculated out of the total number of vehicles acquired over one year.

Private capital societies, including taxi firms, will also be required to buy at least 30 percent electric cars starting in 2020.

Annual vehicle acquisitions made by public authorities for their own transport needs must have at least 20 percent of vehicles powered by green technologies.
