President Iohannis’s reaction to the latest scandal in the Justice system

President Klaus Iohannis held a press conference on Thursday night, during which he expressed his strong disapproval for the scandal created around the National Anti-Corruption Agency (DNA) by “some criminals” who are “desperately trying to discredit the DNA and its leadership”.

Iohannis also revealed that he had met with PM Viorica Dancila and PSD president Liviu Dragnea earlier in the day, and that one of the topics discussed was the justice system.

Regarding the accusations which have been directed at the DNA during the past few days, Iohannis said that they are a “pathetic and unconvincing attempt” at disparaging the agency. “In my opinion, the DNA and its leadership are doing a very good job, and this attack from some criminals only confirms my beliefs,” the president added.

Klaus Iohannis described the meeting he had with the PM and Liviu Dragnea, saying that the purpose of the meeting was to define a framework for the institutional collaboration between him and the new government. The most important project for the upcoming period, said the president, is preparing for the country’s presidency of the EU Council in 2019. The second major project is the Centenary, where Iohannis asked for a coordination of actions.

The president also said that he trusts Justice Minister Tudorel Toader will make a fair decision regarding the DNA, as he is a renowned professional and his position will surely be well-founded form a legal standpoint.

Tudorel Toader announced yesterday that his report regarding several institutions in the justice system will be presented next week in parliament, and that he will announce his conclusions regarding the DNA’s activity in a press conference on Thursday next week.
