Romania has evolved very well in the last years in sheep herding sector, and the meat and milk from these animals are in high demand in Arab countries, said the minister of Agriculture, Achim Irimescu during the visit of his counterpart from Jordan, Rida Shilbli.

According to a release of the ministry, Romania is the main exporter of sheep in Jordan, while Jordan exports vegetables and fruits on the Romanian market and is looking to consolidate these activities and the development of the relation between the two countries in agricultural area.

“This is why we hope that through the visit of the agriculture minister of Jordan we can put in direct contact the producers and importers, succeeding in raising in this way the efficiency from the producer’s point of view, “ said Irimescu.

According to the Ministry data, in the first five months of the year, Romania exported over 550,000 sheep and goats in Jordan, which represents 14.6 percent of the exports towards third countries and 5.8 percent of the total food exports of Romania.

The main exported products in Jordan this year are: corn, animals (sheep, goats, cattle) , meat (sheep, goats, cattle), bakery, fresh fruits (apples, pears, quinces) and until now there were no exports of poultry meat.

In the Ministry’s opinion, the sheep meat from Romania occupies the second place in the Jordan population’s preferences after their domestic kind of meat.

According to the statistics, in Romania there were 15 million sheep and 2 million goats as of June 30.
