A protocol for the protection of virgin forests was sealed between the Ministry of Environment and the WWF Association.

The document stipulates the mapping of the virgin forests and the interdiction of any intervention there.

“Until now, the forests were part of a looser category, which means that in 10 percent of the surface interventions could take place. However, from now on, no intervention will be possible,” said the Environment Minister Laszlo Borbely.

Romania has the largest surface of virgin forests in the European Union. The last estimations are that virgin forests cover 250,000 hectares.
