Laura Codruta Kovesi, head of Romania’s National Anti-corruption Department (DNA), stated on Tuesday that neither her e-mail account, nor that of any member of her family, were hacked in the Black Cube scandal, according to Agerpres. Kovesi was interviewed by the Directorate for Investigating Organised Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) as a witness in case where several Israeli citizens, members of the Black Cube organisation, are being investigated for spying on the communications of and trying to compromise the head of the DNA.

Clarifying what had happened, Kovesi said that “there were during a day and a half countless phones made to my family and to some close friends. They received phones through which attempts were made to find some personal information, but none of the close persons gave in. There is nothing in the file related to my personal or professional lives, or hacked e-mails.”

Kovesi further stated that members of her family and friends were also questioned. “Members of my family were questioned, persons from my entourage who were called by those people gave statements. (…) I am convinced that the DIICOT prosecutors will find out who the client is, will clarify all the details of this case,” said Kovesi for Europa FM, as cited by Agerpres.

She has said that her opinion is that the action was not aimed just at her, but the DNA as a whole. Nevertheless, the attempt at intimidation did not have the desired result. “I’m not scared, why would I be scared? I have nothing to be afraid of, I’ve always followed the law. I have no fear of absolutely anything and we will continue doing our jobs,” stated Kovesi. “What is important that after this event, where intimidating us was attempted, but I don’t believe the aim was to intimidate just us, I believe that this Black Cube action, these repeated attempts at limiting investigations, these attacks in the press — they are attempting to undermine the judicial system,” she added.

Kovesi also maintained her belief “that there are brave prosecutors and judges who will do their jobs despite these attempts, unsuccessful I might call them, at intimidation,” as cited by Agerpres.
