Lia Olguta Vasilescu, the minister of labor, says that the minimum wage will be hiked to RON 1,750 according to the draft of the new public sector pay structure. The mayors will have three stages of salary increases, while the Bucharest General Mayor will have the salary of the Prime Minister, according to Mediafax.

The labor minister said that the discussions regarding the minimum gross salary start from RON 1,750.

„We have three salary increase stages and they start from this minimum base of RON 1,750 up to RON 4,000, where are approximately 60 percent from the state workers, the salaries increases will be the highest ones because we are trying to bring them closer to the average salary and even exceed it. Afterwards, it is the stage between RON 4,000-7,000, where there will be increases but not as high as the first stage. And then the third stage with over RON 7,000 won’t bring high increases, around 3 percent at least, but will be closer to the salary freeze until 2020,”  said Vasilescu.

„We are trying to change the law framework because indemnities will be separated from salaries, as until they were taken together. It’s clearly known that the persons who benefit from indemnities and salaries cannot have any kind of perks, and this led to the situation when mayors, for example, was somewhere at the middle of the scheme between the mayor’s employees because all the directors with cummulated perks and even the salary level that was unequal had higher salaries than mayors, not to mention the mayor’s secretaries who had salaries three times higher than the mayor. The salary of the Bucharest general mayor will be at the same level with the one of the prime minister, as it was considered the emergency ordinance two years and a half ago, ” added Vasilescu for Mediafax.

The minimu wage in Romania grew by 16 percent to RON 1,450 starting February 2017.
