Russian tycoon Oleg Deripaska returns private planes due to burden of US sanctions

Russian tycoon Oleg Deripaska has given back three private jets he was leasing due to the US sanctions imposed on him last month, which make it impossible to keep using the planes, Reuters reports.

The Gulfstream executive jets are popular among rich business people, each worth around USD 30 million.

The return of the planes shows that the sanctions have seriously impacted Deripaska’s business dealings. He is the owner of the Rusal aluminium firm, whose sales and supply chain have been heavily disrupted.

Deripaska was included on a U.S. sanctions blacklist on April 6 because, according to Washington officials, he and other Russian oligarchs had profited from the “malign activities” of the Kremlin around the globe.

Anyone included on the list is barred from entering the United States, and U.S. firms and citizens are barred from doing business with individuals or companies that have been blacklisted.
