A private investor opened the first sarmale production unit in Romania, following an investment of EUR 130,000. The plant is located in Gheorgheni, Harghita county, according to Mediafax.

Sarmale is a traditional Romanian dish that is made of minced meat wrapped in cabbage leaves.

The investor, Bajko Laszlo, started from the idea that people are very busy and do not have time to cook anymore.

“We can see that in stores there are more ready made dishes, steak, a la boeuf salad, all kinds of hors d’oeuvre, even soup, but nobody has thought of sarmale until now. Moreover, cooking this dish requires a great deal of time that women today do not,” said Bajko Laszlo.

He bought an old stable, transformed it completely, equipped it and has hired four people so far.

“In the beginning, there will be a trial period, in the sense that I hired four people who should prepare sarmale manually after a traditional Szekler recipe. If we have great demand, we will hire more personnel, we thought to have in total 14 workers who will prepare 4,000 sarmale daily,” said the owner. A container with approximately eight sarmale will be sold for prices between RON 11.5 and 12.5.
