Beer volumes sold by the local subsidiary of SABMiller have increased by 15 percent in the first quarter ended 30 June 2012, the company announced.

“Volumes in Romania were up 15 percent driven by the launch of economy brand Ciucas in a new PET pack combined with solid growth from our mainstream brand, Timisoreana,” reads the company’s report.

In Romania SABMiller operates production facilities in Timisoara, Cluj-Napoca, Buzau and Brasov. It also owns local producer Bere Azuga.

After the Romanian beer market stabilized in 2011, local beer consumption has gone down by 5 percent in Q1 2012 compared to the similar period of the previous year, according to the Brewers of Romania Association.

In Europe, SABMiller’s sales were up 7 percent on an organic basis. At a global level, SABMiller’s lager volumes grew on an organic basis by 5 percent ahead of the prior year for the quarter. “Including the effect of acquisitions and disposals, total volumes were up 10 percent compared with the corresponding quarter of the prior year.  The group’s financial performance for the quarter was in line with our expectations,” reads the company’s report.
