Romania imported 734.650 hectoliters of wine in the first ten months of 2011, while exports amounted to a meager 87.250 hectoliters, according to data from the Vine and Wine National Employers’ Union (PNVV), cited by Agerpres.
Imports were worth EUR 38.13 million (up 220 percent y-o-y) while exports counted for EUR 12.6 million (down 11 percent y-o-y).
DOC wine sales went up last year
The Romanian wine market has shrunk in the past couple of years, reaching EUR 350 million, according to PNVV representatives. An important change last year was that although overall Romanian consumers didn’t spend more on wine compared 2010, more of them chose quality wines.
According to PNVV, in 2011, Romanian winemakers reported sales increases of between 9 and 20 percent for wines priced above RON 12 (approximately EUR 2.8) per 0.75 liter bottle.
Also, 15 percent more DOC (denomination of controlled origin) labels were issued last year for local producers. 32.7 million such labels were issued in 2011, a level similar to the one reported in 2009.
