Romania’s foreign office in touch with Spanish authorities over Barcelona terror attack

The General Consulate of Romania in Barcelona is communicating with local authorities to check whether Romanian citizens were harmed during the terrorist attack that took place on Thursday evening in Barcelona’s tourist area.

The Romanian Embassy in Madrid set up a crisis cell following the incident.

According to Spanish media, at least 10 people died after a van has ploughed into crowds in Barcelona’s famous Las Ramblas tourist area. Dozens were injured. The driver of the van escaped on foot and barricaded himself in a building close to the area where the attack was carried out, according to media reports.

The attack took place at the height of the tourist season in Barcelona, which is one of Europe’s top travel destinations with at least 11 million visitors a year, according to Al Jazeera.
