The government has published on Thursday a list of 2,672 medium and large-sized companies that registered the biggest debts to the state budget by March 2016.

According to tax administration agency ANAF, there are 186 large tax payers with combined debts of RON 2.6 billion. These firms have challenged in court the payment of taxes worth RON 417 million.

In the category of medium enterprises, there are 2,486 firms with combined debts of RON 3.8 billion. The amount of imposed taxes that have been challenged in court amounts to RON 316 million.

The ANAF said in a statement that the firms that made the public list have been previously asked to pay their taxes or at least clarify their situation.

The biggest debtor to the state budget is European Food, the Romanian company owned by the Micula brothers. However, the owners of the firm have already challenged the RON 400 million debt in court and this is an ongoing case.

Among the biggest debtors there are also several state-owned firms, including Hunedoara Energy Complex, which is in insolvency, and public broadcaster TVR.

In the case of the TVR, the minister of Finance, Anca Dragu, has already suggested that the best solution for solving the financial issues of the broadcaster would the filing for insolvency.
